The Guide
Which Carriage Ride, What It Costs, and How It Works
A short loop of the park's south end, a longer ride with a stop for pictures, or an evening ride out to the holiday lights. Here is what each costs against the city's rate, where the carriages wait, and what changes in 2028.
A Central Park carriage ride is a private horse-drawn carriage for up to four people, driven by a licensed driver on a loop of the park’s south end from Central Park South at 59th Street, for 20 minutes to about an hour. You can hire one from the line of carriages on 59th Street, where the city caps the price at $72.22 for the first 20 minutes, or book a set time online. The ride we would book first is NYC Royal Carriage Rides’ guided ride, 25 to 65 minutes with photo stops, rated 4.9 from 59 reviews and from $103 a carriage in current promotion (usually $112) for up to four (checked October 2026).

What a ride costs
New York City sets the most a horse-drawn cab may charge. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection’s rate, in force since 3 May 2025, is $72.22 for the first 20 minutes and $28.89 for each further 10 minutes. Worked out for the usual ride lengths, per carriage:
| Ride length | City rate, per carriage |
|---|---|
| Up to 20 minutes | $72.22 |
| Up to 30 minutes | $101.11 |
| Up to 40 minutes | $130.00 |
| Up to 50 minutes | $158.89 |
| Up to 60 minutes | $187.78 |
Rate from NYC DCWP’s horse-drawn cab rates page, read in October 2026; the longer lengths add $28.89 for each 10 minutes.
Booked rides are priced by their operators. On GetYourGuide and Viator in October 2026 they ran from $99 to about $425 a carriage, and most of them listed tips as extra. What booking buys is a set start time, a named ride length and route, free cancellation up to 24 hours before on almost every listing, and no queue at the line.
Walk up or book?
Walk up if you are flexible: the carriages wait in a line at the south end of the park, and on a quiet weekday you can step into one. Agree the length and the price before the horse moves.
Book if you have one evening, a date, a proposal or a family to get round the park: in December and on weekends the line moves slowly, and a booked ride starts at your time. Central Park carriage ride prices puts every booked ride against the city rate.

Where the carriages wait
The carriages line up at the south end of the park, along Central Park South (59th Street) between Fifth and Seventh Avenues. Booked rides give a meeting point there: NYC Horse Carriage Rides parks inside the park on West Drive at Seventh Avenue, across from 180 Central Park South; NYCAdventures meets in front of the José Julián Martí statue inside the Sixth Avenue entrance; Big Apple Horse Carriage meets at 180 Central Park South. Your confirmation names the exact spot.
The route
A ride stays in the southern third of the park. The short loop passes Wollman Rink, the Carousel, the Chess and Checkers House and The Dairy. Longer rides go up past The Mall and the Literary Walk to the lake, with a photo stop at Bethesda Terrace or at Cherry Hill, then come back down the west side past Strawberry Fields, Sheep Meadow and Tavern on the Green to Columbus Circle. How long is a Central Park carriage ride sets the lengths against what each one reaches.
Winter, weather and the holiday lights
The rides run all year, with blankets in the cold months. City law takes the horses off the street when the air temperature is 18°F or below, and when it is 90°F or above, or 80°F with an equine heat index of 150 or more (NYC Administrative Code §17-330, and Local Law 203 of 2019 as the Health Department described it to the City Council in July 2026). On those days booked rides are cancelled or moved; the listings we checked offer another date or a refund.
In December, some rides leave the park for the holiday lights on Fifth Avenue and around Rockefeller Center. Christmas carriage rides in Central Park compares them.
What changes in 2028
On 22 October 2026 the New York City Council passed Romanch’s Law (Intro. 943), which phases out horse-drawn carriages by 1 June 2028 and stops new licences, with a transition plan for drivers and owners. As of 29 October 2026 it was awaiting the mayor’s signature, and the drivers’ union, Transport Workers Union Local 100, has said it will challenge it in court. The law is named after Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old visitor who died in June 2026 after a carriage horse bolted in the park. Until the date the law sets, the rides keep running. A pedicab instead
A pedicab tour covers more of the park in an hour, Bow Bridge and Strawberry Fields included, and is priced by the person. Central Park pedicab tours compares them with the carriages, and are Central Park carriage rides worth it weighs the two.
